Dr Christopher P. Hood www.hood-online.co.uk is the Director of the Cardiff Japanese Studies Centre, Cardiff University www.cardiff.ac.uk. After graduating from Sheffield University having studied Business Studies and Japanese, he spent one year on the JET Programme in Aichi Prefecture. He then returned to Sheffield University and in 1998 completed his doctoral research on Japanese education reforms and the influence of Prime Minister Nakasone.

In 1999 he became an Associate Fellow of the Royal Institute of International Affairs and in February 2000 won the business category of the Sir Peter Parker Awards for Spoken Japanese.

He is now conducting research about the shinkansen, looking at its development, the way it reflects different aspects of Japanese society, and what lessons can be learnt from it.

Dr Hood is also a member of the UK-Japan 21 st Century Group, the Honorary Treasurer of the British Association for Japanese Studies, a Council Member of the Japan Society and Membership Secretary of the Japanese Railway Society.
